The success of this technically complex scheme was measured by the fact that B&Q were able to open their store two weeks ahead of programme.
CHQ Partnership were commissioned for the design and construction of a 106,000 sq ft. (9820m2) Retail Warehouse for B&Q PLC, including a 20,000sq. ft Garden Centre, 30,000 sq ft Builder’s Yard and 600 car parking spaces.
The design intent for the football ground site adjacent to Belvedere Station was to produce a ‘Landmark Building’ for the area. This was conceived and later constructed as a bold design of undulating canopies, which a series of glazed pods acting as beacons for entrance and exit to the store.
To compliment these strong architectural features the warehouse itself had a simple elevation treatment formed of silver cladding panels with a feature aerofoil eaves, providing a sophisticated yet complementary backdrop.
