Sainsbury’s Bishop’s Waltham
CHQ received planning permission for a new supermarket at Bishop’s Waltham, Southampton.
This site sits next to a Scheduled Ancient Monument including Bishop’s Waltham Palace, Abbey field, Abbey Mill and South Pond. This historic setting required a sensitive non-standard approach to the building design which evolved throughout the planning process. Roof form and choice of quality materials were of particular importance.
The development includes a new 13 consulting room Doctors Surgery adjacent to the food store and the complete refurbishment of the Abbey Mill building which includes three residential units at the upper levels and customer facilities and rainwater harvesting equipment at the lower levels.
A new public realm space in front of the store links the development to the very attractive South Pond and leads towards the town centre.
